A Republican-led bill on Capitol Hill that would ban transgender women from competing in female sports on the high school and collegiate level faced criticism from the LGBTQ community.

Activists rallied outside Rep. Mark Molinaro’s office in Leeds on Friday, demanding he vote against the bill.

The group called it a “harmful” piece of legislation that has attracted the attention of such athletes like soccer pro Meghan Rapinoe and WNBA star Sue Bird.

What You Need To Know

  • H.R. 734 is a bill that seeks to ban transgender women from competing in female sports on the high school and collegiate levels

  • Proponents of the measure say there may be competitive advantages, and schools allowing it would be in violation of Title IX

  • LGBTQ activists vehemently oppose the bill, called it “harmful” and said it would further isolate the trans community

Should the proposal become law, it would make transgender women competing in most schools a violation of Title IX.

Proponents of the measure said there may be competitive advantages as well.

Molinaro has not indicated whether he’d support the bill, but his office was critical of the rally, claiming the group consisted of people outside his district.

“I don’t know the details of the bill. I think it’s still being formulated. I’m going to obviously want to read it and understand it,” Molinaro said at an event in Central New York on Friday. “I will say this: I encourage those in my district to reach out to us, visit us online to communicate your opinions. I want to represent everyone.”

Activists in Leeds hailed from nearby Dutchess County.

Pride Center leaders said they considered the congressman somewhat of a “friend” during his tenure as county executive.

“When he is voting for legislation down in Washington, he needs to be aware this type of thing has very real impacts on people,” Dutchess County Pride Center Treasurer Jason Baker said. “And it can cause really real hurt to very innocent people who are just trying to live their lives.”

The Biden Administration would like to bar schools' ability to ban transgender athletes from competing.
