The New York State Fair opened Wednesday with plenty of new and old foods to try. If you plan to attend the fair, go with an empty stomach because most of these are calorie-busting foods.

1. S’moreo from Fried Specialties

Fried Specialties has been coming to the fair for years. They serve many different fried foods including Oreos, peanut butter and jelly and candy bars. Their most calorie-busting food, The Defibrillator, is a half-pound burger with fried pickles, fried bacon, shredded cheese, between two grilled cheese sandwiches. John Bohn, the manager at Fried Specialties, said, “When it comes out, it’s a good 4-6 inches tall. At the state fair, there are zero calories.”

2. Gator, kangaroo, shark and wild boar on a stick from Stix and Things

Stix and Things has been coming to the New York State Fair since 2003. They serve gator, kangaroo, shark and wild boar on a stick. Some may be apprehensive, but owner, Phil Galuppi says, “That’s why you come to the state fair.”

3. Krunchy Dogs from Fair Deli

Fair Deli is new to the fair this year, but not new to Syracuse as they have operated their restaurant for the last 22 years. They serve Krunchy Dogs, a beef hot dog and mozzarella cheese coated in panko, deep fried and rolled in Hot Cheeto dust. The creator of the dish, Zach Marji, said it was inspired by Korean corn dogs. In addition to the Krunchy Dogs, they have deep fried meatballs, and deep fried Reuben empanadas.

4. Hot cocoa-flavored taters on a stick from Scotty’s Tater Twisters

Scotty’s Tater Twisters has been coming to the fair for 38 years with new flavors of 16-inch-long tater twists. Some of their new flavors this year include hot cocoa, salted maple and ketchup featuring a ketchup salt they created. “I love talking to people who come from all over the state all over the country really,” said Scott Smith owner of Scotty’s Tater Twisters. “It is so enjoyable.”

5. Bacon bomb from The Bacon Bomb

The Bacon Bomb is thick cut bacon with Italian sausage, crumbled bacon, cheddar cheese and BBQ sauce served on a round roll. Owner Dave Desimone said, “When we first started in this business, it was a menu item, and then it just kept growing, becoming more popular. Now, it’s the whole stand.”
