Brian Cornell is a flag football guru. He’s been coaching for a number of years now, as interest in the sport continues to grow.

And that interest isn’t solely coming from the boys.

What You Need To Know

  • Colleges now offer scholarships to women for flag football

  • The program allows girls of all ages to compete together

  • At least 15 girls have already joined the program

"My brother started doing it and when I found out that I was allowed to do it, I got really excited because I really wanted to try out a new sport," said fifth grade Madison Novotny.

Girls like Madison Novotny are already falling in love with the sport. She takes the handoff for the first touchdown of the night, and the first ever in this all-girls program.

"I like all the action. You never have a useless job in it. Everyone always has a use," said Novotny.

Girls of all ages participate in the program together. Some are as young as 7-years-old who love watching the NFL with their dad.

"I watch the Bills with him sometimes," said Emma Langeland.

As Kendra Williams takes the snap, it comes at an exciting time for women in flag football.

The NFL has partnered with a number of colleges to offer scholarships to the newly formed women’s flag football collegiate program.

"There’s high schools across the country that are building the programs and they’re having them that are recruiting coaches and it’s a great opportunity for females who love the game of football to participate and actually have a career playing it up into the collegiate level," said Coach Cornell.

"It’s really fun to be out here and just to play and I like football a lot. It’s just one of my passions and it’s really fun," said 11-year-old Kendra Williams.

While these girls may be young, it won’t be long now until we could see them scoring touchdowns in colleges across the nation.
