Dreamer Glen looks up at a set of four photos on a pink wall. Generations of family all in one spot — her grandparents all the way down to her children.

The bright walls line Miss Prissy’s, the restaurant stand Dreamer now owns. This has been her dream for nearly two decades.

“My grandmother taught me everything I know,” she says, moving to another set of photos. This time, it’s two on the wall — a headshot of her grandmother sitting above a picture of Dreamer.

Her grandmother taught her well, Dreamer doesn’t use recipes. Instead, she just goes by taste and tradition. Since the food comes from years of family cooking, she knows exactly how it should be.

“It’s like, this goes in this, and this goes in this, and this is how it’s supposed to taste,” she says, taking a sample of the day’s batch of collard greens. “If it doesn’t taste that way, you just keep doing it until it does.”

Before opening in the market, Dreamer ran Miss Prissy’s as a catering company. Her first big event was a Juneteenth celebration — a fitting start for the business that’s doubled its staff the past two months.

“They’re kids of color,” Dreamer says with a smile. She’s wearing a mask, but the pride in her eyes is apparent. “Your first job, or one of your first jobs, is working for a Black woman, so that’s an honor.”

One of those kids is her 15-year-old daughter.

Dreamer is one of many Black women leading the charge to open businesses, spread love through food, and make a change.

“It shouldn’t be something that’s unheard of,” Dreamer says. “We’re here, we’re not going anywhere, so here we are; we’re kicking doors down.”
