Congressman Tom Reed has already shown a willingness to cross the aisle, quite literally doing so to certify President-elect Joe Biden's victory, and also as a gesture of solidarity following the riot at the U.S. Capitol last week.
But the local represenative says he's opposed to impeaching the president.
In an op-ed to The New York Times, Reed argues that impeachment would damage the integrity of the justice system and fan the flames of division. Instead, he plans to introduce a resolution to censure the president.
The act itself is mostly symbollic, but more important is the vote and how it would define any politician who stands by the president.
A resolution would likely be supported by large numbers of Republicans in both chambers, where the impeachment proceedings are not likely to make it through the Senate.
