The mixed weather conditions have been causing a lot of problems such as school buses skidding off roads, and kids getting injured. The varying conditions are a challenge for DPW crews as they try to treat the roads.
For example, freezing rain is predicted after rain and bouts of snow. Officials said they can put salt down, but if it melts or washes away, the roads can still ice up.
Additionally, our meteorologists said the misty fog from the freezing rain makes is hard to see.
However, people we spoke with said it's just part of life in Central New York.
“As you can see I have a truck so I will put it in four wheel drive and make it to work,” said Sandra Houston.
"We have our plows up and ready, we have our mechanics prepared to make any repairs that need to be made to the plows, and we're ready to go. But it's not unusual. This is Syracuse, so snow is a way of life,” said the City of Syracuse Chief Operating Officer Corey Driscoll Dunham.
The DPW said ice on hills and rush hour traffic areas will be monitored closely because people have a higher risk of getting into an accident. They are considered priority areas, and then the plows throw salt on our neighborhoods.
