What was supposed to be a vigil for a recent homicide victim turned into a crime scene on Monday night.

Police were called for reports of shots being fired.

"When anything like this does occur, there's a concern for the public. This happened on a street in the City of Utica where there's traffic. There was other people attending the vigil that are innocent parties," said Utica Police Lieutenant Bryan Coromato.

The vigil happened less than a week after Quaheim Holland's body was found in a vehicle behind a barn in Whitestown. Holland was from Utica. Early autopsy results show he died from a gunshot wound.

Hours after his body was found, a man was shot in the leg while sitting in his vehicle in Utica.

"These are all things that we're looking into. Again, we want to stress the importance —  we know that there are people out there that have that information. We would hope that they would bring that to us," said Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol.

Utica Police, the Oneida County Sheriff's Office, and other agencies are working together, looking at the recent events.

Utica Police said the shots fired on Monday night don't seem coincidental.

"This situation definitely dictates that there was something related to that case that is what led to this shots fired. We're still continuing to solidify that information and we're still talking to witnesses and the reported victim in this case to see if our theory is indeed accurate," Coromato said.

It's not clear if these events were gang-related, but Lieutenant Coromato said it's a possibility.

"There's a lot of back work we have to do on trying to figure out if people are indeed part of a group or a gang, and see which part they're a part of, and if there's been a defection or things like that. So at this point it would be unfair to say that this was an actual gang-related shooting," said Coromato.

Utica Police will step up patrols in response to the recent violence.

Anyone with information on the shootings is asked to call the Utica Police Department at (315) 223-3510.

Those with information on the homicide are asked to contact the Oneida County Sheriff's Office at (315) 765-2226.
