Uber released a new confirmation code feature to improve passenger safety.
This comes at the heels of 21-year-old Samantha Josephson being murdered in March after accidently confusing a random car for an Uber driver. She hopped in around 2 a.m., and 14 hours later, her body was found.
This comes as complaints for Uber drivers continue to come to police in all areas of the country.
Matthew Gantt is a Syracuse Uber driver who has been driving as long as the ride-hailing company has been around.
“You are going to be safe with me,” he laughed, “I am a lifer. I am a lifer Uber driver."
Then he turned serious as he answered questions about rider safety.
“We’ve got evil in this world today,” Gant said. "Drivers have to worry about their safety, too. Uber has made good changes since it’s started.”
Brianna Lennehan is a Syracuse University student. She’s 20 years old, almost as old as Samantha was.
“I just came back to campus, so I have to update my apps,” Lennehan said.
It’s a confirmation code found under settings. You get it sent to you before you hop into an Uber, and you and the driver confirm it.
“I feel much safer on my campus now that I can confirm my rides,” Lennehan said.
As an avid Uber user, she’s had her share of experiences with weird stranger-to-stranger Uber encounters.
“I think everyone has had an experience with a creepy Uber driver,” Lennehan revealed.
Syracuse Police Sergeant Matthew Malinowski suggested how students like Lennehan and others can keep safe.
“It’s most advisable to stay inside,” said Malinowski. “If you are standing outside with your phone in your hand outside, someone might notice you are doing that. You could potentially be a victim of a crime.”
Lennehan wants to share safety tips and the new Uber feature to her friends.
“I'll definitely feel better about my friends getting into Ubers here on campus,” Lennehan said.
The confirmation code is just one of a couple features you have to make sure you get to your destination safely. Under the same settings where the confirmation code is found, you could share your trip with family and friends.
