The site of the Whispering Pines Animal Rescue in Waterville was quiet on Wednesday afternoon.

An investigation into the rescue began a few months ago by the CNY SPCA, when people reported buying sick puppies that later died. 60 dogs, four cats and a bird were taken last week, and the owners are now facing charges.

"Even though we're used to it, it is taxing. Especially this time of year when the shelter is full with animals, we've got to try to move animals around," said CNY SPCA Chief Investigator William Pulaski.

Other organizations are stepping up to help the CNY SPCA after taking in all the animals.

"When they came in, we had 90 dogs and 110 cats already," said Dee Schaefer of CNY SPCA Humane Education and Adoption Counseling. "So, we had a full plate when they came in. So now we're just trying to reshuffle."

CNY SPCA staff said it's important to pay attention to the conditions of rescues when you visit. They said to check if the animals seem lethargic, hydrated, and if their kennels are large enough for their size. Also, make sure the animals have clean blankets.

A big factor to consider that plays into all of these is if the facility is transparent.

"They shouldn't be afraid to bring you in the facility to see their animals. To me, that's key," Schaeffer said. "If you have to wait somewhere for somebody to bring you an animal to a parking lot, that would make my radar go up."

They also recommend visiting 501 C3 nonprofits.

Moving forward, the CNY SPCA is asking for donations to help the dogs including blankets, food, and monetary donations.

The CNY SPCA staff is asking anyone who has adopted from Whispering Pines within the last calendar year to call. You can reach the CNY SPCA at 315-454 3469.
