The two people killed in a fiery crash on Erie Blvd. Monday night have been identified by authorities.

Syracuse Police said Thursday afternoon that the two occupants of the car were Tawakal Rashid, 22, of Syracuse, and Musbah Hassan, 14, of Syracuse.

Firefighters found the vehicle wrapped around a tree and engulfed in flames shortly before 11 p.m. Monday.

Crews were able to knock down the flames after a while.

The road was closed for several hours at the corner of Walnut Ave. and Erie Blvd. while firefighters cleared the scene.

An investigation revealed that Rashid was driving the car west on Erie Blvd. at three times the posted speed limit while in a speed contest with a dark colored SUV.

There is no evidence that supports that the two vehicles made contact with each other at any time leading up to the collision.

The Syracuse Police Department Traffic Section is attempting to identify the other vehicle and motorist involved.  Anyone with information related to this investigation is encouraged to contact the Syracuse Police Traffic Section at (315)442-5151.
