On major interstates across the United States things happen fast, unfortunately so do accidents.

That was the case Wednesday night in Syracuse after a fatal crash involving Syracuse Basketball’s head coach Jim Boeheim.

"The occupants realized they were in a real compromised position being there on the roadway,” said Kenton Buckner, Syracuse Police Chief in a press conference on Thursday.

So the question is what do you do if you are put in this situation? Do you stay inside your vehicle or get out? And if you do get out, where do you go?

AAA General Manager Ed Welsh says each scenario is different but safety is always at the forefront.

"Well I think the first thing you want to do is to make sure everyone in the vehicle is safe and unhurt,” said Welsh. "If you feel safer outside of your car then you need to exit outside of your car without putting yourself in traffic."

This piece of advice is something Syracuse Police echoed in their press conference Thursday.

Also putting his expertise on the matter is Bernard Gigliotti of Gigliotti Driving School. Gigliotti saying the most important thing is to stay inside of the car as it can give you some sort of protection

"It's a heck of a lot safer in that vehicle with your doors locked, if you decide to get out of that vehicle get as far away from that vehicle as you could,” said Gigliotti.

Gigliotti says if you are driving towards a car which is disabled you should make sure to slow down and move over.

"On the other side and you can't slow down a little bit speed is a big factor,” said Gigliotti.

As of now Syracuse Police have not ruled speed a factor in this accident.
