Syracuse men’s basketball coach Jim Boeheim was the driver of a car involved in a fatal pedestrian crash on Interstate 690 Wednesday night.

Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick told Spectrum News that a car carrying four people crashed on the interstate near the Thompson Road exit around 11:22 p.m., hours after Syracuse defeated Louisville at the Carrier Dome.

All four occupants got out of the vehicle. Boeheim, in an oncoming vehicle, noticed the disabled car and tried avoiding the vehicle, which was in the middle of the road. As a result, Boeheim struck the victim who was standing on the side of the road.

Field sobriety and alco-sensor tests for both drivers were negative for any signs of impairment. Authorities say Boeheim stayed at the scene, called police, tried to administer aid and even tried to stop other cars.

Police identified the victim as 51-year-old Jorge Jimenez of Syracuse. He was transported to Upstate University Hospital after the crash and was pronounced dead.

Boeheim is said to be cooperating with the investigation. He released a statement through the SU basketball program.

Reconstruction of the scene will be performed and speeds cannot be determined at this time. No tickets have been issued.

The Orange host No. 1 Duke on Saturday night. ESPN had planned to air its weekly "College Gameday" program from Syracuse the day of the game, but it has decided to cancel those plans.

"Due to the recent tragedy, and after careful consideration due to the celebratory nature of the show, ESPN’s College GameDay will originate from ESPN headquarters in Bristol, Conn., this weekend, instead of at Syracuse University," ESPN said in a statement. "We spoke with school officials and they understand the decision."
