The suspect in the stabbing death of a Utica man that pleaded guilty to second-degree murder has been sentenced.
The Oneida County District Attorney said Edmond Hyatt stabbed 40-year-old Nicholas White in March.
Investigators say it happened at an apartment on John Street in Utica.
As part of the plea agreement, Hyatt was sentenced to 22 years to life in prison on October 31.
Prosecutors say Hyatt changed his story multiple times, and the weapon was found in his apartment. They say losing Nicholas White is a significant loss.
"He mattered because his instinct was to protect others from you, and he paid for this instinct with his very life. He mattered because he had a family who loved him and he them," Michael Coluzza, the Oneida County first assistant district attorney.
His attorney spoke on his behalf.
"My client is understandably remorseful for what had happened, and certainly wishes that not only for his own sake, but for the others involved, that this certainly never happened," said Adam Tyksinski, his defense attorney.
