A quick response by Delta Lake lifeguards saved the life of a man who nearly drowned in Delta Lake Thursday afternoon.

56-year-old Michael Mastro is in critical condition after suffering an unknown medical condition while swimming at Delta Lake State Park. Several lifeguards along with a good Samaritan responded.

Mastro was unconscious, and CPR was performed until the ambulance arrived. One of the responding lifeguards says he was breathing on his own when the ambulance came.

She says these instances don't happen a lot, but when they do staff are ready.

"We train once a week for two hours. We come in before work at 9:00 and we train for two hours, practicing CPR, any first aids that may occur so we were very prepared for this to happen. It doesn't occur that often, but we were very prepared. We were ready," said Sarah Harter, a Delta Lake lifeguard.

The situation is still being investigated. More details are expected to be released.
