Governor Andrew Cuomo appears to support holding the New York State Fair in 2021 if it can be done safely.

“We have invested a lot of money in the fair," Cuomo said in a conference call Monday. "I personally love the fair. I love what we’ve done to the fair. The people of the state have done record attendace at the fair for years. So if there’s any way we can open it safely, we will. And we have a little time, but if there’s any way we can, we will.”

The prospect of a possible state fair this year comes about a week after the announcement that amusement parks can reopen on April 9 at 33 percent capacity, however the safety guidelines for the State Fair, as well as individual county fairs, would be different than those for amusement parks.

The 2020 State Fair was supposed to be the longest one ever, as the governor decided early in the year to extend the event another five days. Like most other large events, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the event's cancellation.

Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon said while they are the host for the State Fair, the decision lies with the governor, but he was also more focused on reopening county-owned entertainment venues like the War Memorial and the St. Joseph's Health Amphitheater.
