New York City's 40th District Councilmember Rita Joseph was inspired to run for office after teaching for 22 years--she wanted to create positive change in the school system. So far, the biggest challenge that Joseph has faced in her role has been negotiating with city administration to help schools avoid budget cuts.
Joseph would say the biggest lesson she has learned during her time in office is that by working together and building trust, she and her colleagues can effectively deliver results for not only their respective districts, but also the whole city. One of her proudest accomplishments so far is establishing an office within the New York City Public Schools to support students in foster care.
If Joseph could have lunch with any elected official, she would choose U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. One of her hobbies is attending live theater--she has seen The Lion King 17 times.
