Q: How will cashless tolling work when I'm towing my camper?
A: The cashless tolls coming to the New York State Thruway – slated for 2020 – are spurring a lot of questions. For towing a camper, or anything with additional axels, the cashless toll system will work the same.
According to the Thruway Authority, the system in place on the cashless tolling gantries will be able to “read” how many axles a vehicle has, which will determine how much the gets charged.
From there, the system works the same as any other – either the amount will be deducted from an E-ZPass account, or a bill will be sent to the address on file with the DMV.
So, as a bottom line, campers – or any vehicle with additional axles – will face a higher toll than cars.
An important note, because there will no longer be toll booths, light indicators will also be going away. For example, E-ZPass customers will no longer see a warning saying their account is low. We encourage all E-ZPass customers to log onto their account on e-zpassny.com or call 1-800-333-8655 to sign up for e-mail and/or text alerts. This will notify customers if their account is low, credit card is expiring, or other important messages.
