More than 90,000 people are expected at the New York State Fairgrounds for Syracuse Nationals this weekend. It's the biggest event since the coronavirus pandemic hit in March 2020. If you don’t have a hot rod of your own, you could still leave with one.
East Syracuse-Minoa High School students built a 1968 Dodge Coronet “Super Bee.” It’s the 16th car the Spartan Garage has built. The students rebuilt the engine and transmission. Then they did the brakes, suspension and interior.
“I’m a Dodge guy," said Paul Hughes, one of the student mechanics. "I’ve always liked these older muscle cars from Dodge and everything, so just working on one was cool because they’re hard to find, and they’re not cheap. Can’t really go out and buy one.”
If that doesn’t sound challenging enough, they did all of this while dealing with strict COVID-19 rules throughout the school year. Many students were only in the building for a couple days a week, and parts were hard to find or on backorder.
“I guess it was kind of rewarding, because we are the kind of the class that had to deal with COVID the whole year, and we still got the car done on time," said Hughes, one of the mechanics. "So that’s kind of impressive.”
Tickets start at $10 each, three for $25, or 15 for $100. The money goes toward next year’s car and scholarships for the students.
You can buy tickets at the Nationals. The students have already sold thousands of tickets.
