TROY, NY -- A false alarm in Troy Saturday afternoon, after what police say was a good intent call, caused some panic.

Troy Police say the call came in around 12:30pm, from a resident who thought they saw a prowler with a gun enter a nearby, abandoned building on 6th Avenue.

But when police went inside, nobody was there. Police say they surrounded the building within minutes of receiving the call.

They attempted to call the person out of the building, over the course of about 40 minutes, but no one was inside.

A SWAT team entered the building and quickly determined it was safe.

Although it turned out to be a false alarm, police say their response was appropriate, based on the information they had.

"Some chatter inside that a neighbor heard led us to believe there was a confrontation. Rather be safe than sorry, we called in our SWAT team, had them clear the building. No one was in the building," says Troy Police Captain Dan DeWolf.

The person who made the call is not facing any charges.
