Two Saratoga County Sheriff's deputies shot and killed a man who opened fire on them while they were execucting a warrant as part of a regionwide drug bust at a residence on Foxwoods Drive in Clifton Park, Sheriff Michael Zurlo said at an afternoon press conference.

One deputy was undergoing surgery with a shattered femur bone at Albany Medical Center, while the other had been treated there and released, Zurlo said.

Anthony Zaremski, 23, fired at two members of the sheriff's office's special operations team who entered the residence while aiding the DEA in executing a federal search warrant at the Foxwoods Drive location early Tuesday morning, according to the sheriff's office.

The search warrant, per the sheriff's office, was "relative to a narcotics investigation" at the house. Upon making entry, Zurlo said Zaremski fired on authorities, with them returning fire.

"We encountered a dangerous subject when we entered that building," Zurlo said.

Law enforcement officers said Zarmeski has had a past criminal history with arrests related to drugs. The drug raid in Clifton Park was a part of an ongoing criminal investigation dating back six months and among three raids that took place in the Capital Region Tuesday.

The DEA, also involved in these investigations, said the raids were successful, resulting in the seizure of hundreds of thousands of fentanyl and ecstasy pills, cocaine and several rifles and handguns.
