Former New York State Assemblyman Vito Lopez has died.
His attorney confirms he died Monday night after a long battle with cancer.
Lopez was a member of the State Assembly for 30 years and served as the former chairman of the Kings County Democratic Party.
In a statement, Lopez's attorney says he dedicated much of his life serving his community saying, in part, "Vito was a trained social worker and he never forgot his roots. His accomplishments on behalf of working class people, in particular seniors, in Brooklyn and Queens are many."
Lopez was once one of the most powerful officials in New York state until a sexual harassment scandal brought him down.
Vito Lopez was 74.
