New York Attorney General Letitia James' longtime allies at the Working Families Party on Friday endorsed her bid for a second term.
The endorsement came a day after James was designated the preferred Democratic candidate for attorney general at the state party's convention in New York City.
“Tish James has successfully used the office of Attorney General as shield and sword, protecting New Yorkers from predatory landlords and environmental harms while taking on some of the worst actors in New York State—including Big Pharma and Amazon," ” said Sochie Nnaemeka, the director of the New York Working Families Party. "Under her continued leadership, we’re confident working New Yorkers will have their rights and livelihoods protected."
James is not expected to face a Democratic primary challenge this year. James has long been allied with the Working Families Party for much of her political career when she first became a Brooklyn city council member.
“There’s no question our government must do more to address the needs of working people, and there is no force more committed to this mission than the Working Families Party," James said. "As Attorney General, I have taken on landlords that harm vulnerable tenants, Big Pharma companies that flooded our communities with addictive pills, and those who perpetuate the scourge of gun violence. I am running for re-election to continue standing up to powerful interests whenever they hurt everyday New Yorkers. I am proud to earn the WFP’s endorsement and look forward to campaigning alongside WFP in the months to come."
The WFP this year endorsed New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams' campaign for governor. Williams is running a Democratic primary challenge to Gov. Kathy Hochul.
Republican candidate for attorney general Michael Henry in a statement criticized the endorsement and called for James to make her questionnaire to the party public.
“You cannot be New York’s Chief Law Enforcement Officer with any connection to the WFP, a party that prides itself on disrespecting law enforcement," he said. "I demand that Attorney General Letitia James make her WFP questionnaire public so that everyday New Yorkers understand how she answered critical public safety questions."
