New York state Assemblywoman Didi Barrett wants to create a cabinet-level position in the governor's office to help the state's veterans and their families access services and programs.

The bill is being proposed amid concerns only a fraction of veterans are receiving benefits from state government.

At the same time, there are concerns military veterans are confused by the array of state agencies and departments they currently must navigate. The bill as proposed by Barrett is meant to reduce the confusion.

There can be up to a half dozen state agencies when veterans or their family members try to access programs ranging from services to treat PTSD or education aid.

"The idea is really to provide the best access, the best services to our veterans and military families with the least confusion and the fewest barriers," she said in Capital Tonight interview on Friday.
