TAMPA, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have reversed course on a decision made nearly four years ago, stating that former coach Jon Gruden will be reinstated into the team's Ring of Honor.
Gruden coached the Bucs for seven years from 2002-08, leading the team to its first Super Bowl win. He was initially placed in the Ring of Honor in 2017.
In 2021, Gruden resigned as Las Vegas Raiders coach after emails he sent before being hired in 2018 contained racist, homophobic and misogynistic comments.
The Bucs followed by removing Gruden from the Ring of Honor but said Thursday that he would be added back.
Between his coaching stints with the Bucs and Raiders, Gruden spent many years working in television.
“Jon Gruden was initially inducted into the Buccaneers Ring of Honor based on his many accomplishments during his seven seasons as our head coach, and he remains a significant figure in the history of our franchise,” the team said in a statement.
“Upon further reflection, we have decided to reinstate him into the Buccaneers Ring of Honor.”
