Amid pushback from some schools regarding the wearing of hair beads at New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) events, the organization voted unanimously to allow student athletes to wear them for now.

The organization said Tuesday it was placing a moratorium on prohibiting hair beads, meaning students are able to wear them until member districts can "adequately address this topic and concerns."

The issue stems from an incident at a track and field event at which student athletes were asked to remove beads from their hair.

If students had wanted to wear hair beads before the moratorium, they would have had to apply for a waiver to wear them.

NYSPHAA Executive Director Robert Zayas had said it is part of the jewelry rule they've had on the books for nearly 20 years, and said the rule was based on safety.

"It's been in existence for a number of decades," Zayas said. "And I think our association, we're constantly reviewing rules and regulations, and this is a good example of taking a step back, listening to the membership and really doing what's in the best interest of the student athletes."

Zayas also said policy changes would be brought to the various sports and safety committees. He said it will take as long as it takes to get it right.
