Albany Police Chief Eric Hawkins on Thursday showed video camera footage from a police shooting that left a man in critical condition earlier this week.

The body camera footage released shows the moments before an Albany officer shot a man early Monday morning, an action Hawkins described as "justified and unavoidable."

The man shot in the incident is Jordan Young, 32, said family spokesperson Alice Green, the executive director of the Center For Law and Justice in Albany.

She said Wednesday Young was still in critical condition and unable to speak at Albany Medical Center Hospital. Young is expected to undergo an additional surgical procedure on Friday, Green said.

The video shows two officers patrolling the area of New Scotland Avenue after a 911 caller reported a home invasion at a Morris Street residence.

Hawkins said the officers attempted to de-escalate the situation when they encountered a man. In the video, the officers can be heard yelling "put the knife down."

The video shows a man running toward the officer who ultimately fired the shots.

In a statement released Thursday, Mayor Kathy Sheehan agreed with Hawkins' interpretation of events.

"As Chief Hawkins stated on Monday, it is clear from the video that the use of deadly force in this incident was justified and consistent with APD’s use of force policy," Sheehan stated. "It is clear from the video the officers had less than 60 seconds to attempt to de-escalate the situation before the individual charged at one of the officers while threatening them with a knife, a deadly weapon."

The state attorney general's office, the Albany County district attorney, Albany Police Department and Albany Police Review Board are actively investigating the incident, Hawkins said.
