A Saratoga Springs judge dismissed all charges against a member of the Schenectady Board of Education who was one of several protesters arrested in the city last summer following a Black Lives Matter protest.

Judge Francine Vero on Monday dropped the unlawful imprisonment and disorderly conduct charges lodged against Jamaica Miles, who last appeared in court on Jan. 4.

Miles was one of about a dozen protestors who were arrested and accused of blocking traffic as they denounced remarks made by Saratoga Springs Assistant Police Chief John Catone.

Catone later apologized and clarified his remarks.

Saratoga County District Attorney Karen Heggen said in a statement that Vero's decision was based not so much on the facts of the case, but mostly on other factors involved in Miles' motion to have the charges dismissed in the interest of justice.

Miles called the decision "a victory that ensures no one else experiences what we have gone through for our rights and our freedoms."
