Another makeshift memorial appeared on Albany's streets on Monday.

This one was for a 29-year-old man police say was killed during a shooting that injured six others Saturday night outside The Lounge on North Lake Avenue.

Police said Alexander Bolton of New Bedford, Massachusetts, suffered a gunshot wound to the torso and died from his wounds at Albany Medical Center Hospital. The six persons shot and taken to the hospital were a 25-year-old, a 26-year-old and a 31-year-old with gunshot wounds to their shoulders; a 28-year-old and a 42-year-old with gunshot wounds to their arms; and a 37-year-old with a gunshot wound to the leg, according to police.

“We have determined that there was, in all likelihood, an illegal club operating out of that facility,” Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan said. “The codes department has been focusing its attention on that building for more than a year.”

Bullet holes and boarded up windows could be seen on nearby buildings. It marks the third shooting in the city this year involving five or more victims.

“More action needs to take place, more action,” longtime Albany resident Allison Williams said. “More footwork.”

Williams is frustrated by the city’s response to the gun violence that has afflicted the city in recent months.

“It takes real ground work to get something done,” she said. “If you’re not out here beating the streets, talking to people and finding out what the issues are, you don’t know what’s going on.”

Electricity at The Lounge was shut off by the city. Similar action was taken after another shooting earlier this year.

“You don’t know when you’re preventing a gunshot,” said Sheehan. “It’s sort of hard to prove the negative.”

Rev. Valerie Faust, who is attempting to unseat Sheehan next month with a write-in campaign, visited the scene Monday. She and Williams were critical of another business being shut down.

“Be careful how you do that because then we’re going to have a horrible situation in Albany,” said Faust. “No business will be safe because crime is everywhere.”

Sheehan says a crackdown on illegal clubs will help reduce gun violence in the city and is reminding people that if they see something, say something.

“The community has a role to play in helping us to keep the community safe,” she said. “We need more of that so we can intervene before a shooting occurs.”
