As violence continues in Albany, community leaders are trying to make the city safer.

On Friday, Mayor Kathy Sheehan joined leaders from Albany 518 SNUG and Urban Grief at City Hall to recognize National Gun Violence Awareness Day.

The city has been experiencing a growing number of shootings, including the death of Destiny Greene, a 15-year-old Shaker High student.

Sheehan says there needs to be swift action taken.

"But we also have to look at the supply,” Mayor Sheehan said. “When you have guns that are so plentiful, that one can be painted to like a toy, and left on the side of the street, for a child to pick up and use, we have a gun problem. That's a gun problem."

Organizations like 518 SNUG are working to reduce violence and Urban Grief helps support those impacted.

"When we think about Hediya Pendleton, who was 16 years old shot in Chicago as an innocent victim, and see the work that's been done on other organizations to raise awareness on Gun Violence Awareness Day,” SNUG’s Jerome Brown said. “We have our own Hediyas, we have Destiny Greenes."
