A popular local bakery is now getting some national attention for its pizza thanks to Food and Wine Magazine.

The tomato pie from Perreca's Bakery in Schenectady has been voted one of the best pizzas in the country on the magazine's website.

Owner Maria Perreca Papa says the tomato pie is a staple in Naples, and her family's recipe hasn't changed in more than 100 years.

It's made with the same dough as Perreca's famous crusty bread, homemade tomato sauce, then sprinkled with parmesan and Romano cheese before being baked in a coal-fired oven.

Perreca Papa says it's authentic Italian eating, and that's why people love it.

“...We have not changed a thing. How we stir the sauce, the tomatoes that we use,” Perreca Papa said.

Maria says she's honored by the national recognition, and hopes this helps make Schenectady a tourist destination.
