Investigators are looking into what appears to be a suspicious fire on the corner of Third Street and Liberty in Troy.

The fire was reported shortly after 7 a.m. Friday. Responding firefighters were greeted by heavy smoke and fire from the windows of the building.

Four people were rescued from the inside. Spectrum News was told that one person jumped out of a second floor window. The individuals rescued were transported to Samaritan Hospital in Albany. One individual went into cardiac arrest but was revived at the hospital. A firefighter was also treated for second degree burns. 

Investigators say that two pets died in the fire and others are missing. 

Crews managed to stop the fire before it spread to adjacent buildings, but not before it tore through the first and second floors.

“The amount of fire that our guys faced when they arrived on scene was a significant amount of fire. The fact that our guys were capable [and] kept it from spreading to other buildings is a testament to their hard work and to the skill that those guys displayed at this fire,” said Troy Fire Chief Eric McMahon.

Troy and state fire investigators and the Troy Police Department have remained on the scene throughout the morning to try and determine what caused the fire.
