Panic shopping is a growing problem across the country right now, including in New York.

It is affecting grocery stores, supermarkets, and even pharmacies. Assemblyman John McDonald, who also owns Marra's Pharmacy in Cohoes, is warning people against stocking up on a large supply of medicine many people need on a consistent basis.

"Part of the problem is the FDA put out a recommendation saying you should try to get a 90-day supply," McDonald said. "The challenge is the pharmaceutical industry, from manufacturers to wholesale to pharmacy, isn't prepared to ramp up to that large of a volume of capacity."

McDonald says many pharmacists are struggling with medication shortages due to people trying to buy 90 days worth of things like insulin or asthma medication.

"There is nothing wrong coming in and getting a refill of one inhaler; it's when people are calling their doctor and saying 'give me six so I can have a 90-day supply,' that's a concern. Because to be honest with you, the system is just not in place to supply six inhalers for everybody at once," McDonald explained.

McDonald also weighed in on how different the budget process is shaping up to be this year. He says even if members have to vote remotely, work still needs to get done.

"The reality is we have work to do, it needs to get done. We need to get it done one way or the other," McDonald insisted. "And as long as there is bipartisan support and both houses support that aspect, for this exceptional time in our state's history, it makes perfect sense."
