A new bill recently signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo will increase incentives for volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers.
State Senator Jen Metzger introduced the bill that lifts the maximum cap for Length of Service Awards Program contributions from $700 to $1,200. That means more money available based on their time volunteering for those first responders past retirement age.
This is only the second time the cap has gone up since it was enacted back in 1988.
Metzger said this increase is long overdue and hopes it shows emergency service workers just how valued they are in New York State.
"This incentive rewards and recognizes our volunteers for the critical work they do for us and also provides an incentive that will help with recruitment," said Metzger.
The law goes into effect immediately.
