The House Judiciary Committee is expected to vote today on a bill to permanently fund the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund.

During a hearing on the bill yesterday in Washington, former "Daily Show" host Jon Stewart made an emotional plea to lawmakers.

"There is not a person here; there is not an empty chair on that stage that didn't tweet out 'Never forget the heroes of 9/11. Never forget their bravery. Never forget what they did, what they gave to this country, well here they are.” Stewart said. “Your indifference cost these people their most valuable commodity, time...it's the one thing they're running out of," the former “Daily Show” host added.

Stewart was one of several people to speak at the hearing in support of the "Never Forget the Heroes Act."

The bill would replenish and permanently extend victims' access to the fund.

In the years since the September 11th attacks, more than 40,000 people have applied to the Victim Compensation Fund.

But the fund is set to run out of money by December 2020.

As a result, claims have been reduced by as much as 70 percent in some cases.

Lawmakers from both parties said they support the bill and some who did not attend the hearing in person said they were monitoring it as they dealt with other congressional business.
