Shenendehowa students who participate in the Unified basketball program say it's an experience they'll never forget.
"Just the reaction of the kids, getting in the games, the baskets, the rebounds, and then the winning at the end, they love it. It's awesome," said Michael Westfall, a Shen senior in his third year with the Unified team.
Paul Macaluso, a senior, said he fell in love with the sport as a freshman. Now he feels he can do it all on the court.
"Fight for the rebound, get to the rim, sometimes take an open [3-point shot] if I have the look," Macaluso said.
Head coach Carley Galarneau says it's hard not smile when you're in the gym for a game.
"It's meaningful competition and it gives them a chance to be a high school athlete," Galareneau said.
The Special Olympics New York Unified Games are underwritten locally by Capital Region Honda Dealers.
