The 16-year-old charged with killing his friend with a machete last year was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison on Friday.

Adrian Sawyer pleaded not guilty back in September in the death of 15-year-old Maverick Bowman, of Ticonderoga.

According to prosecutors, Bowman was killed with a machete by Sawyer while they were hanging out together at an abandoned home in the town of Putnam last July, then set the home on fire.

Sawyer then admitted to counts of second degree murder and second degree arson.

When asked Friday if he wanted to address the court during his sentencing, Sawyer replied with “I’m alright.”

The judge then said that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Speaking after court, Sawyer’s lawyer said his client suffers from mental deficiencies and has an IQ of 61. He has recommended he be sent to prison where he can get mental health treatment.
