The death of a Greene Correctional inmate is under investigation by the state. This comes after social media posts about Anthony Myrie's death got national attention.
According to DOCCS, 24-year-old Anthony Myrie died at Albany Medical Center on Monday. How he ended up here is sparking outrage on social media, including from several celebrities.
Myrie had been serving a seven-year sentence inside Greene Correctional Facility. He was convicted of attempted criminal sale of a controlled substance.
DOCCS says Myrie was involved in an incident with several other inmates, and later died at Albany Med.
Celebrities like rappers Meek Mill and Cardi B, though, are speaking out, sharing posts from family and friends that point the finger at correctional officers. The posts say officers took Myrie to what is known as "the box" Monday afternoon, and a short time later, he was in critical condition before being pronounced dead.
Though the investigation for this incident is ongoing, in 2014, similar allegations of abuse led to findings from the state inspector general that a group of correctional officers were responsible for an inmate attack at Greene.
Cardi B also claims a personal connection to Greene. In a profanity-laced Instagram post from last night, she says she visited someone at the prison who she says was beat up by a correctional officer and had a black eye for months.
