A 61-year-old woman was killed Tuesday night in Latham when she was hit by a car while crossing the intersection of Swatling Road and Route 2.
According to the Town of Colonie, Office of the Chief of Police news release, the woman's name is Janet A. Nittoli of New York City. Nittoli has reportedly been living in the Capital region for the past few months, and may have been using homeless shelters, says the release.
Their investigation shows she often used the CDTA bus line, and spent a "significant" amount of time in the area of Troy Schenectady Road in Latham.
Nittoli was crossing the road around 7 p.m. Tuesday when she was struck by a car traveling westbound. The driver of the vehicle is a 57-year-old male, and he is cooperating with police.
Officers were re-constructing the scene with overhead drones and reviewing surveillance video from a nearby Cumberland Farms gas station.
"Any pedestrian or cyclists that are going to be on out on the street should be wearing perfect reflective clothing. The better you are seen, the better the driver has a chance to see you," said Lt. Robert Donnelly of the Colonie Police Department.
Remnants from the crash were still on the roadway Wednesday around 4:30 a.m. Police ask anyone who saw the accident to call their station at 518-783-2744.
