The multi-family house on Albany Street in Schenectady, damaged by fire earlier this week, is being demolished, leaving a family displaced.
Crews started knocking down the building around 9 a.m. They expect it to take a few more hours for it to be completed.
The building was deemed unsafe after a fire broke out Tuesday night. Schenectady officials believe it started in the basement, and flames ripped through the deli on the first floor and onto the apartments on the second. No one was inside at the time of the fire; however, weather conditions made it difficult to battle the flames. They say humidity kept the smoke trapped inside the building.
There were three firefighters treated at the hospital for heat-related injuries, but they have been released since. The building is a total loss. Investigators still have not said exactly what started the fire.
