The Capital Region community is remmembering 20-year-old Justus Simon, who passed away last week after a long battle with cancer.
Hundreds of teachers, friends, teammates, school officials, and family members packed Agape Apostolic Church of Deliverance on saturday.
Calling hours began at 9:30 a.m., and was followed by a funeral service.
Simon played basketball for Green Tech High Charter School and most recently, Hudson Valley Community College.
In 2015, Spectrum News highlighted Simon as the Scholar Athlete of the Week.
Crystal Campbell, Simon’s guidance counselor in middle and high school, talked to Spectrum News about Simon’s battle with cancer.
"It was a battle of faith for the family, I believe Justus remained strong and fought as hard as he could," said Campbell. "I think in the end it was more so about the will of God and trusting in the Lord, so while it may have been a struggle I believe in the end there was some peace too."
Green Tech is honoring Simon’s memory with a Justus Memorial Scholarship Fund.
The school is asking for donation to help launch the fund.
