ROTTERDAM, N.Y. -- Five people have been displaced from their homes following an early morning fire in Rotterdam.

The fire broke out around midnight on Guilderland Avenue.

The building is home to a business and five apartments, four of which were occupied at the time.

Authorities say all five residents, along with their pets got out safely, no one was injured.

The Red Cross is helping two of the residents.

The Pine Grove fire chief says it was a challenge for firefighters to knock it down.

"It's very difficult, very difficult we had hallways that led to other hallways. It’s just very hard to fight a fire once the fire gets into the boards between the ceiling and the roof it’s very hard to battle,” said Pine Grove Fire Department Wesley Blessing.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
