A teenager who raped a woman at knife-point in the parking lot of UHS Wilson Memorial Hospital will spend the next 10 years in prison.
Brandon Corey was sentenced Wednesday for the attack in April 2016. He was 16 years old at the time, but was denied youthful offender status at his sentencing.
In a letter to the court, the victim said she constantly replays the night in her head and finds it extremely difficult to go back to work.
Prosecutors had been pushing for a 30-year prison term. They read a statement from the 22-year-old nurse he attacked, where she described how it's changed her life.
"The sentence is shocking. Neither the death penalty nor life without release were available for a potential sentence, so we asked for 30 years, which we thought would have been appropriate. The defendant could have gotten 50,” said Broome County District Attorney Steve Cornwell.
Corey's defense attorney said the teen was mentally impaired, and asked for leniency due to the abuse he suffered as a child.
Corey himself also apologized for his actions. He'll serve a 10-year prison sentence followed by 20 years of post-release supervision. He must also register as a sex offender.
There was a co-defendant in the case, a young man who was with Corey the night of the attack. Jacob Coish previously pleaded guilty to first-degree robbery and is expected to be sentenced to five to seven years.
