UTICA, NY. -- A memorial 5K run/walk was held at SUNY Polytechnic Institute to honor the life of Alexandra Kogut on Sunday.
Kogut was beaten to death by her boyfriend in her dorm room in 2012.
The community came out to remember Kogut, raise awareness and bring peace to those who have experienced domestic or dating violence. People who knew Kogut say the community support is encouraging.
"It's just something that really is amazing because even though she lived a short life, she's in the hearts of those that are here and those that are not here and will be with them forever," said Teresa Dunn, a participant.
Many wore purple for domestic violence awareness. It was also Kogut's favorite color.
