ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- A big night for Monroe High School's football team as it took on Spencerport at Friday night's season opener.

It's the first time in more than 30 years that Monroe has had a varsity team.

Students, fans, and district members came out to the Rhinos Stadium Friday night to cheer on the two teams.

Monroe coach Jason Muhammad started working with the program two years ago.

Athletic director Greg Witman says the fact the the school has a team this fast is owed to Muhammed's dedication.

"Coach Muhammad has been tremendous in building this," Witman said. "If we had anybody else I don't think we would be ready to play varsity football today. He's been Mr. Energy from day one."

Although the Monroe Red Jackets are back in action, they will not have a single home game due to their school being renovated.
