A fire in Glens Falls forced at least eight people from their homes Friday. As our Solomon Syed says it's the second largest apartment building fire the city has seen, in under a week.

GLENS FALLS, N.Y. -- "When they got here, we had heavy smoke condition, fire in the back of the building," Glens Falls Fire Chief James Schrammel said.

It was an alarming scene at 14 Culvert Street just after 8 a.m. Friday.

"Five people on the upper porch that had to be rescued," Schrammel said.

Luckily firefighters were able to rescue all five.

The building, which the owner says had eight units, is likely a total loss.

"I feel very badly for the poor people, they've been asking me, you know, they lost their home," landlord Bill Davidson said. "Thank god they got out safely, but they lost their home, and probably all of their belongings. That's a terrible situation."

The fire was out by noon. Still no word on how or where it started.

This week hasn't been an easy one for the Glens Falls Fire Department. On Tuesday, another apartment building on East Notre Dame Street was damaged, displacing 11 people who lived there, but for the firefighters, it's just another day on the job.

"We handle it pretty well. It's what we're built for," Schrammel said.
