ALBANY, N.Y. -- A new light replacement program will save $100,000 in the city of Albany.

Crews are replacing more than 7,000 existing bulbs with more energy efficient ones in parks and fields, as well as in 23 different city buildings.

Mayor Kathy Sheehan says that initial $100,000 savings in energy costs will grow over time.

"So that $100,000 I talked about doesn't even take into consideration the maintenance costs that we're going to be saving long term. And it also increases the quality of the lighting. The lights have been changed out to my office, I am impacted by this directly and I must say it improves the lighting in the office," said Sheehan.

The funding came from the New York Power Authority’s Five Cities Energy Plans, which includes the city of Albany.

And leaders say the carbon reduction with this step is equivalent to taking 550 cars off the road.
