NATIONWIDE -- The creator of "Marmaduke," a Western New York native and Syracuse University alumnus, passed away last week at the age of 91.

Brad Anderson created the comic strip with the Great Dane in 1954, after graduating from Syracuse three years earlier. The strip appeared in more than 500 newspapers in 10 countries.

Anderson was born in Jamestown and returned to Chautauqua County in 2012 for a ceremony in his honor.

He was also awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Cartoonists Society in 2013.
