ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- William James, who is accused of opening fire Saturday morning during a house party on Woodward Street in Rochester, was brought into court Monday in a wheelchair. He pleaded not guilty in the murder of John Rudolph.

Rudolph was one of six people who were shot, including James, 30.

Police identified the other victims as Herbert Thomas, 34, who was killed; Elizabeth Washington, 24; Shaquanda Moody, 25; and Imani Williams, 26, who were wounded.

Investigators said the shooting happened after a fight broke out at the house. Court papers said James waived his Miranda rights and said he was in a dispute with Rudolph, which led to the shooting.

"We do believe that there was more than one shooter so we are waiting for results from testing from the Medical Examiner's Office, the hospital and crime lab and to sort exactly what happened," prosecutor Brian Green said.

Green would not say if the two men were shooting at each other.

Also in the courtroom Monday was the family of Washington, who said she could possibly be paralyzed now, but they're thanking God she's alive.

"It really hurts me to see my kid laying in that bed, and I don't know what to do but pray," Lizzy's father Wendell Washington said.

Lizzy's family says she was at the party with Williams, her sister.  Family members tell us the bullet hit Lizzy, a mother of two, in the back, traveled through her body, and hit Imani.

"It shouldn't be happening. All this violence and stuff like that. There's better ways to handle stuff instead of using a gun," Melinda Green said. "I don't go to house parties anymore because of stuff like this.  It's crazy."

The doors and windows at 36 Woodward Street remain boarded up. There's a small memorial set-up on the porch with candles burning for those killed and injured in the shooting. Neighbors said it's the second serious incident at the home this year after a double shooting in March.

William James is being held without bail. He's due back in court later this week.
