A Rensselaer man has been arrested in connection to an undercover sting against sexual predators in Colonie. Time Warner Cable News reporter Geoff Redick has the story.
COLONIE, N.Y. – "It didn't go as smooth as we would have wanted, but in the end everything worked out okay,” said Colonie Police Lt. Robert Winn.
Last Friday was a target for Colonie Police, according to Lieutenant Robert Winn, police were set to arrest 45-year-old sex offender Bernard Milewski, at Colonie Center. Milewski thought he was meeting a 15-year-old boy. In reality, it was an undercover agent.
"The defendant in this case, messaged him through the internet, looking to meet up and ultimately those conversations led up to where the reason for the meeting was going to be for sexual contact,” said Winn.
At about 3:30, police say, Bernard Milewski rolled up, saw police, and panicked.
"He took that opportunity to drive at two officers that were already out of their vehicle. They had to take evasive action, to not be hit by him,” Winn said.
Milewski fled the plaza, court paperwork states he ran a red light, before losing police on the Northway at speeds up to 90 miles per hour.
"Less than 30 minutes later, Albany Police had located the vehicle: the defendant had returned to work, which is at 137 Lark Street. We located him there, inside the building,” Winn said.
That's when Milewski spoke with police, the conversation recorded in court documents, revealing Milewski claimed he drove at police because he didn't know who they were; after admitting he did know, Milewski told police: "It was really stupid; I was panicking."
"He certainly was aware of the consequences of his actions. It becomes very physiological; it's fight or flight. He chose the flight,” said Winn.
Milewski has been charged with disseminating indecent material, child endangerment, and reckless endangerment of the police officers he nearly struck.
Police have confiscated Milewski's computer, to find out if he ever had any actual young victims.
Anyone who feels they've been victimized by Milewski in the past is being urged to come forward.
