Mayor Eric Adams is not the first incumbent mayor of the five boroughs to run on a third party line.
In 1969, then-Mayor John Lindsay lost the Republican Primary but then pulled off the win after running an independent campaign in the general election.
But how did Lindsay succeed? And can Adams follow in his footsteps?
